Sodium metabisulphite is an inorganic compound in white or light yellow crystal powder. It offers a strong smell of sulfur dioxide, and its relative density is 1.4g/m3. The free flowing substance is easy to dissolve in water and glycerin-water solution. It has acidity. When the ambient temperature rises, sodium metabisulfite offers better solubility and is soluble in ethanol.

1. Food grade sodium metabisulphite can be utilized as bleach agent while making candies, cakes, bamboo shoots, and more. It is also ideal loosening agent for bread and cracker biscuit baking. When utilized as antiseptic and germicide in food industry, the substance is commonly used when there is need for storage of fruit juice, tinned food, brews, the cereals food, etc. It can also be used as inhibitor and antistaling agent for relative long term keeping of day lily, seafood, fruit and vegetable.

2. Industrial grade sodium metabisulphite is an ideal mordant for use in fabric dyeing and printing fields, and can be used for textile dechlorinate after bleaching. In chemical and pharmaceutical industry, the product can be used as sulfonating agent and reducer. Also, it can be utilized for bleaching of paper pulp, bamboo and timber, and used as treatment agent in waste water treatment industry. In addition, the substance is commonly used as solidifying agent in rubber industry, or served as hydro carbon perfume aldehyde in perfume industry.

3. Pharmaceutical grade sodium metabisulphite is regularly used in the chemical synthesis processes for the production of acrylic fiber, vitamin K, vitamin A, and pharmaceutical intermediates.

4. In photography industry, sodium metabisulphite can be used as an ingredient in the developing solution for film and photography.
